Week of March 27

Curriculum Notes

In literacy, our word wall words for this week are:
     each
     up
     us
     long
     other

We are continuing to work on descriptive writing. We have talked about using colour words, number words, shapes, and sizes to describe what we see, as well as using our other senses to describe how things feel, sound, taste and smell.

Please have your child bring in a stuffed animal on Monday for a descriptive writing activity.

In math, we have worked on linear measurement. This week, we will begin to learn about area.

In science, we will be doing an experiment to test which materials repel or absorb water. We will conclude this unit in a couple of weeks with a building task. If you can, please save paper towel or toilet paper rolls and small cardboard boxes (like a granola bar box) that we will use for our structures.

Other Notes

The school will be marking Earth Hour on Monday from 10 - 11 am.

With the (hopefully) warmer weather, comes a very wet school yard. Feel free to send in extra socks or a change of clothes for your child if you are concerned about your child sitting in wet clothes.

Helping our St. Rita Community

Dear Parents,

There are 2 families in our school community that have suffered the devastating loss of their homes in the fire that occurred in our neighbourhood on March 12.

During this Lenten season, we ask for your prayers for these families during this very difficult time. In addition, if your family is able to make a cash donation, it would be very much appreciated. You can send in cash or a cheque (payable to St. Rita School) which will be given directly to the families. We will be collecting money until next Friday, March 31.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Curriculum Notes

In literacy, we will begin descriptive writing. Students have already been introduced to adjectives. We will work on using our five senses to describe things.

Our word wall words for this week are:
     part
     way
     which
     car
     call

In math we have started a unit on measurement. We are looking at linear measurement this week using non-standard units, such as paper clips, popsicle sticks and unifix cubes, to measure things.

In religion, we are focusing on Lent and preparing for Easter. We have talked about praying, doing good deeds and giving up something (like some TV or computer time) during Lent to help us be the best person we can be.

In science, we have looked at various materials and some of their properties. We will look at different objects this week and discuss what they are made of and how they are made to serve their purpose.

On Friday, March 24, the grade 1s will be visiting the Eco-Fair in the gym.
