Week of May 29

Curriculum Notes

In literacy, we will begin to learn about persuasive writing. We will also focus on contractions this week. In addition, we will also be writing our recount of the month of May. It is hard to believe June is almost here!

In math, we will be starting a new unit on probability. Students will use mathematical vocabulary to describe the likelihood of everyday events. We will discuss events that are impossible, unlikely, certain, less likely or more likely.

In science, students will create their own food chain. We will also learn about energy conservation.

In religion and family life, we will share stories about Baptism. An information page will be sent home. Please complete this with your child and return it to school by Thursday. If you have a photo of your child's baptism, please send that to school as well. The children love to share photos of themselves and see photos of each other as babies. If your child has not been baptized, please just record that on the sheet.

Other Notes

The last recognition assembly is this Thursday, June 1 at 1:00 pm.

Curriculum Notes

In literacy, we are reviewing our last 18 word wall words. We are also working on compound words and the skill of inferring while reading.

In math, we continue to work on the concept of symmetry. This will lead into a discussion of "equal shares." Grade 1 students are expected to be able to recognize and describe halves and quarters or fourths.

In family life, we will begin the unit "Created Sexual: Male and Female." A letter describing this unit was sent home last week. Hopefully, you have had a chance to review this information.

In science, we are still learning about different types of energy. We will also discuss renewable and nonrenewable energy.

In  drama, we are putting both our acting and inferring skills to the test with a variety of charades.

In music, we are practising creating and performing simple rhythm patterns. We are also focusing on recognizing high and low notes.

Makerspace Fun

Last week, our class had fun experimenting with Makerspace. Students had the opportunity to program Beebots and Ozobots, create with Lego and test motion with Marble Run. Here are some photos of the students using the Makerspace materials:
